October 11 2007. Yahoo Pipes Founder Pasha Sadri who we noted recently departed from Yahoo has unveiled his new project Polyvore. A sort of fashion collage site it allows users to upload product photos from around the web and create outfits. Please send occasional e-mail offers from Wired affiliated websites and publications and carefully selected companies. To me Polyvore appears to provide just marginal improvements over existing solutions such as those of Adobe rarely a great idea when you are competing against leaders in specific segments all the same who knows how the web works. Unfortunately they are limited at this point in what programs you can add they re adding new places like Wordpress Pandora etc. If you ve ever used Trillian or Adium for the Mac Other downloadable chat aggregators you know the joy of having IM and ICQ and Yahoo Messenger together but Digsby has made me a happy clam like no one s business Not only do I have IM ICQ Messenger AND Google Chat in one program but it has Facebook AND Myspace alerts AND email alerts So depending on what I tell it to alert me about a little attractive rounded box pops up on my desktop. I just stumbled across a web-based program like Digsby called that I just signed up for and will try out. I love Pandora Music s ability to create personalized playlists that I can continually tweak to my liking and just got introduced to Stumble Upon a browser plug-in that lets you find interesting URLs you ve never heard of with a single click based on recommendation from two million or so stumblers. For starters it hopes to be the uber-discovery engine of all Web Media from music to silly YouTube stuff to professional TV and Hollywood fare. Not only that they want to blast through arbitrary media-based boundaries on the Web today you know--go to iTunes for music go to YouTube for video go to Google to search for articles and pull all of them together in a new delivery mode that feels more like today s familiar broadcast methods TV channels radio stations than clicking around the Web. For a cross-country plane trip maybe I d create a six-hour channel with any free Web concerts by favorite bands to webinars on fly-casting to movies and TV shows assuming Divvio lands the licensing deals to get past DRM issues. Among Web 2. But the biggest cost-savings came from rethinking how to take advantage of these smarter pipes say the process changes that helped the company reduce the time to deploy a new T1 line from 130 days to around 20. Martin Wattenberg a researcher at IBM s Visual Communication Lab has put together an interesting website that explores the social aspects of data visualization. Com has a very nice feature on their mapping web app that let you explore maps coupled with limited data searching that makes it easy to draw annotation on top of the map s view and save those snapshots in permanent links that can shared with others. It started when companies like Google Yahoo Amazon and others started to open up access to their websites at a lower level than simply visiting their web-pages. They started offering web services that made it possible for other web pages to access information automatically from their sites and transparently use the raw information in their own web pages. A bunch of websites sprang up that used this interconnection mechanism to link two or more such web services providing a unique site that offers something the other two never intended to do.
