Basic trendwatching with Technorati. Technorati is much more than a vertical search engine for blogs. Technorati keeps the finger on the pulse of the blogosphere and gives us access to the news both new and old. Perhaps the most interesting tool that Technorati offers to trendwatchers is the historical chart. You may recall that in our recent post about Trends in Seth Godins Alexa data we concluded that social bookmarking sites grew substantially over the last six months. We can also use Technorati charts to compare trends. Curiously this is at odds with the Alexa chart that was part of our recent analysis - at least if you believe that page loads correlate with mentions in the blogosphere they should. Comparing trends with BlogPulse. Technorati allows you to track a single trend. Also Google Trends is a useful comparison tool but in this post well focus mainly on BlogPulse.

Today I m going to continue that train of thought by being about a day late to the party talking about BlogPulse. I think part of the reason that BlogPulse hasn t gotten much press over the years and it has been years since they ve been around since 2005 is that they re still not competitive on the comprehensiveness of their blog indexing as compared to Technorati and Google Blog Search. And from what it looks like to me BlogPulse similar to Technorati seems to be progressing down that same path of measurement more by engagement and conversation as opposed to simple pageview metrics ala Quantcast Compete and Alexa. To be real clear here they don t go as far with BlogPulse as I describe in my piece nor as far as most of the Rat Pack described in our ideal situation on this weekend s show. The BlogPulse system functions by measuring amount of links into an article not quite as simplistic as Technorati s linking algorithm but essentially the same thing. Isnt this what the likes of Google and Technorati do by looking at backlinks and the relative value of those backlinks.

Technorati indexes more than 1. If Google is the Web s reference library Technorati is becoming its coffee house. I love technorati but I also use google. But technorati is also good for tech niche. How do i get a better alexa rating thats the real questions. Thanks for the good review of the 4 major blog searching engines I am still partial to google blogsearch myself but I do use Technorati occasionally. Alexa is a web information company that allows you to track the performance of any website. I would recommend downloading the Alexa toolbar to get a better understanding of the information available. BlogPulse describes itself as an automated trend discovery system for blogs. BlogPulse offers plenty of trend and other analytic information which can shape decision-making and let s you understand the buzz around a brand. Technorati is another great blog search engine. Technorati not only tracks the authority and influence of blogs but offers an index of influential blogs. I actually thought BlogPulse was great but had to revise my opinion there. I tried using it for the most popular blog and news stories on the Internet but it counts automated linkages pings as well and they therefore measure data which is mainly spam Technorati stopped using the automated pinging. So BlogPulse has dropped out of my useful list.
